There's ongoing debate among educators about the best teaching methods. While some traditionally favored rote memorization and independent learning, recent studies show that phonics instruction leads to faster and better reading development in children.

What is Phonics?

Phonics goes beyond just memorizing letters. It teaches children to understand the sounds letters make, and how those sounds come together to form words. This includes skills like breaking words down into individual sounds (phonemic awareness), blending sounds together, and even manipulating sounds to create new words. Research shows that this approach is more effective than focusing solely on the memorization of words (like the whole-language approach) for helping young children develop strong reading skills.

Whole language approach/ Rote memorization vs. Phonics

The whole-language approach relies on memorizing whole words by sight. Teachers might repeat sentences with words like "fan," "van," and "pan" to help children recognize them individually. This doesn't teach them to connect the letters "an" to a specific sound, so they wouldn't know how to pronounce "ran" on their own.

Phonics, on the other hand, equips children with analytical skills to understand how written language works. Teachers would point out that "fan," "van," and "pan" all share the "-an" ending, which makes a specific sound. By focusing on these patterns, children can sound out familiar words and even guess how new words might sound based on their spelling.

Self Directed Learning vs. Phonics

Some believe simply reading to children and letting them explore books independently is enough for them to learn to read. While this approach fosters a love of reading, it's not sufficient for mastering English. English is a language where letters represent sounds, and children need to understand this connection to decode words.

Phonics provides the tools for this understanding. Children learn the sounds associated with letters and how changing the order of letters alters the meaning (like "bat" vs. "tab"). Research shows that children with strong phonics skills, or phonemic awareness, become successful readers much faster than those who don't.

How Parents Can Support Phonics Learning at Home

Parents play a crucial role in fostering children’s reading development. Here are some ways you can actively support phonics development:

Reinforce what they learn in school: Use the words your child is learning at school in everyday conversations. Reading familiar stories together can also be beneficial.

Playful Learning: Make learning letter sounds fun! Engage your child by asking questions about the sounds individual letters make at the beginning and end of words.

Conclusion

While phonics is especially helpful for beginning readers, it benefits children of all ages. Strong phonics skills can improve reading fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension across all subjects. Phonics skills directly translate to better spelling. Knowing the sounds associated with letters helps children sound out words as they write them, reducing reliance on rote memorization.

Having explained the importance of phonics, there are undeniably many words in English language that are not spelled phonetically. However, a strong foundation in phonics allows children to better approach these irregularities and develop strategies for decoding them.

This article explores the importance of physical fitness for women, highlighting the many reasons why women should prioritize their physical health and embrace fitness as a crucial component of their lives.

Mental Health Benefits

Exercise has a profound impact on mental health. For women, who often juggle multiple roles and responsibilities, physical fitness can serve as a stress reliever and mood enhancer. From the first menstrual cycle until menopause, women live with a shifting level of estrogen and progesterone that impacts their fertility patterns as well as also their brain chemistry and moods. When estrogen levels drop, such as before and during a woman’s period or leading up to menopause, women lose a natural source of the “feel good” brain chemical called serotonin. This makes them more susceptible to moodiness, depression and anxiety attacks, such as the symptoms found in severe premenstrual syndrome or post-partum depression. Activities like yoga, meditation, and aerobic exercise have been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. The endorphins released during exercise can boost mood, increase energy levels, and improve overall emotional well-being.

Prevents Bone Loss and Osteoporosis

Women are far more vulnerable than men to develop osteoporosis and related bone fracture and loss of height as they age. According to the Office on Women’s Health, 8 million out of 10 million of Americans with osteoporosis are women, and half of women over age 50 who have osteoporosis will break a bone. This is largely because women have thinner bones than men and lose bone strength more rapidly as they age due to the loss of estrogen.

One of the best ways to build strong bones is through exercise, preferably starting in the younger years. During the teen and young adult years is when women build most of the bone mass that can protect them from osteoporosis later in life.

Weight-bearing and muscle strengthening exercises promote bone health, no matter what your age. Tennis, hiking, aerobics or jogging build bones and keep them strong. Lifting weights, using exercise bands or simply standing up and rising to your toes, builds strength, balance and flexibility that can prevent falls.

Improved Quality of Life

Physical fitness can enhance the quality of life for women by increasing energy levels, improving sleep, and promoting better digestion. As women achieve fitness goals and milestones, they often experience a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. This newfound confidence can extend to other areas of life, fostering a positive self-image and encouraging women to pursue their goals with determination and resilience.

How Much Exercise Do I Need?

150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity each week. Moderate-intensity activity is when your heart is beating faster but you can still have conversation. A brisk, 30-minute walk 5 times a week is a great example.

Or you could do 75 minutes of vigorous intensity aerobic activity each week. This occurs when you’re breathing hard and it's difficult to hold conversation. A 40-minute jog or step class 2 times per week is one example.

In addition to aerobic or cardio exercise, you should strive to do muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days each week, allowing 1 day between sessions to avoid putting too much stress on muscles and joints. Or you could devise a plan which focuses on working certain muscle groups on specific days to ward off muscle strain.

Physical fitness is essential for women, offering a wide range of benefits that extend beyond the physical. Beginning a regular exercise routine is beneficial to your health no matter what age you start.

Be flexible and creative. You don’t need a solid hour of physical activity to reap health benefits. Experts suggest activity for 10 to 20 minutes a few times daily is just as effective as a solid hour-long session. Taking a walk during lunch, parking further from your destination or climbing a few stairs are great ways to squeeze in some fitness during your workday. If you’re with your toddlers, a trip to a playground, park, or even hanging out in your backyard can fulfill some fitness time. The key is to keep your body moving.

The heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) lashed the city, causing widespread flooding and disrupting daily life. This article focuses on the measures taken by the Government of Dubai before and during the rains to ensure safety and swift resumption to normalcy.

Early Warnings and Public Response

The UAE's National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) played a crucial role by issuing timely warnings before the storm hit. The government urged residents to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel, which helped minimize casualties. Social media played a vital role in disseminating information and safety advisories.

Government websites and social media:

The body concerned with the regulation of private education in Dubai, the KHDA issued a notice to all non-state run schools, nurseries and universities to move to distance learning to ensure safety of students and teaching staff. It joined an announcement by the Dubai Government that all public sector employees work from home and that private sector entities adopt remote working as well.

Community volunteers

Despite the warnings, the sheer volume of rain overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to flash floods. As floodwaters rose, ordinary citizens stepped up to become extraordinary helpers. Social media platforms like WhatsApp groups emerged as hubs for coordinating rescue efforts. Volunteers used private vehicles, sometimes even kayaks, to navigate flooded streets and transport stranded residents to safety.

Infrastructure Restoration:

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Municipality were at the forefront. They deployed a large workforce with heavy machinery, pumps, and water tanks to clear floodwaters and debris from roads and public spaces.

Airport Operations:

Dubai International Airport, a global giant in passenger traffic, wasn't spared from the recent deluge. The record-breaking rainfall caused significant disruptions, putting the airport's resilience to the test. Dubai Airport Authority responded swiftly. Airport staff deployed a fleet of vacuum trucks to remove the standing water. The scale of the flooding, however, necessitated additional measures. Stricter measures were implemented for arriving passengers, with Emirates airline temporarily halting local check-in to prioritize clearing connecting passengers. This streamlined departing flights and ensured a faster return to normalcy.

In conclusion, these measures, implemented swiftly and strategically, helped Dubai bounce back from the heavy rainfall. The city's focus on resident safety and infrastructure restoration played a crucial role in bringing life back to normal. This event also served as a stark reminder of the impact of climate change, which scientists say is leading to more extreme weather events worldwide. Dubai, which recently hosted COP28 climate talks, may need to re-evaluate its infrastructure and disaster preparedness plans to be better equipped for similar situations in the future.

Yet, amidst the chaos, one powerful tool stands out as a beacon of hope: time management. It's not just about squeezing more tasks into fewer hours; it's about prioritizing, optimizing, and ultimately, reclaiming control over our most precious resource – time.

While effective time management holds the key to reclaiming control, numerous challenges can impede our efforts. Here are some common time management hurdles and strategies to overcome them.

1. Procrastination

Challenge: Procrastination is the arch-nemesis of productivity, tempting us to defer important tasks in favour of instant gratification or avoidance of discomfort.

Solution: To overcome procrastination, it is important to identify the root cause and address it head-on. Some helpful strategies include breaking tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, setting deadlines, and creating a reward system for completed tasks.

2. Lack of Prioritization

Challenge: Without clear priorities, we risk spending time on tasks that are neither important nor urgent, detracting from more meaningful endeavours.

Solution: Adopt a systematic approach to prioritisation by distinguishing between tasks that are important and those that are merely urgent. Utilise tools like Eisenhower's Urgent/Important Matrix to categorise tasks based on their significance and deadline. The Eisenhower Matrix helps you prioritise tasks by dividing them into four categories: urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and neither urgent nor important. Focus on completing high-priority tasks first before addressing less critical ones.

3. Poor Planning

Challenge: Failing to plan effectively can lead to inefficiency and wasted time, as tasks remain disorganized and deadlines creep up unexpectedly.

Solution: Without a clear schedule, it's easy to become disorganized and inefficient with your time. Nighttime planning allows you to create a structured schedule for the following day, allocating specific time slots to each task or activity. When you plan at night, you can hit the ground running the next morning. Having a clear roadmap of what needs to be done allows you to start your day with purpose and momentum, rather than spending time figuring out your priorities. Consider using a calendar or planner to schedule your tasks, setting realistic deadlines, and breaking tasks into smaller, more manageable steps.

4. Distractions

Challenge: In today's hyperconnected world, distractions abound, from email notifications and social media alerts to noisy environments and multitasking.

Solution: Minimize distractions by creating a conducive work environment free from interruptions. Turn off non-essential notifications and designate specific times to check email and social media. Practice single-tasking, dedicating your full attention to one task at a time, to enhance focus and productivity.

In essence, mastering time management is the cornerstone of achieving a harmonious work-life balance. By identifying common challenges and implementing proven time management strategies, you can boost your productivity and achieve your professional and personal goals more efficiently. Effective time management empowers us to dedicate time to activities that nurture our passions, hobbies, and relationships.
